Home for the Holidays -- It Gets Better Each Year

Home for the Holidays -- It Gets Better Each Year

The pre-Christmas hustle and bustle last week was probably the most intense I had ever experienced.  Having to plan, shop for, cook for, and just generally prepare for a large Christmas Eve party is really enough for anyone.

The fact that I was very busy with real estate last week added to the drama.  I finally figured out that - and this has NOT failed in the last few years - whenever I go away for a few days or plan a party, the ‘you know what' hits the fan and I am busier than ever.

Now, I am not complaining by any means.  However, why does that surge always happen when I have a ton of personal things planned and lots to do?  My girlfriend told me I will just have to have more parties and take more vacations.  LOL

Anyway, my Christmas Eve party went off without a hitch.  Everything worked out perfectly.  I had no major ‘epic fails' with the food, and everyone said they had a wonderful time.  Yes, even if you think you'll never get it all done, it always works out.

I made it around to my guests as best I could; many came to me and chatted it up in the kitchen or lent a hand as I was bringing food out or bringing it in and setting up the next course.

There was this one period of time, though, when I sat down in a central location and observed many of my guests from a good vantage point.  I watched and just felt a real sense of happiness and contentment.  Here I was in the last week - at times like a real crazy lady running around - trying to make sure all the food was adequate, prepared properly, all the gifts wrapped and just tending to all the details.

But I realized in those few free moments I had that none of that was important.  I watched my relatives and friends, all intermingling with each other, laughing and talking and from all observations, just having a really nice time.  THAT to me was worth more than anything.  Here they were in my home just enjoying themselves and having a good time.  THAT is what Christmas is all about.

I wrote a post last Christmas (Home for the Holidays - More Than a Feeling) about how I feel about celebrating the holidays in my home.  That feeling never goes away. Actually, it just gets better each year.  I am blessed to own a wonderful home and have a great, loving family and friends to share special events with.

This Christmas Eve was no different.  I was truly HOME for the holidays.

Best wishes to everyone reading this for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2011.
